Yesterday when I was at the airport waiting to pick up Oliver from Cleveland I saw a family in the baggage check area sitting down with a maltese puppy…the puppy was just flown in from Florida. The breeder was with the dog and obviously flew with it on the plane. The family had 3 young children and they were all excited to get the new puppy….they were all handling it and giving it kisses and saying things like “look he’s so afraid he is shaking”. It was a wonderful sight to see a family getting all excited about a new puppy but it also made me think of the 3 dogs that I have up for adoption and the start of life they must have had that was similar to the one that i was watching and how they were all surrendered to me because they bit the kids and could not be controlled.

All three of these dogs get along incredible with my 2 youngest children who interact with them and would be typical of a family with children…..Romy who is 17 months old and Clover who is 3 years old. None of these dogs ever jump up on them or bites them or does anything they are not supposed to do around them and these dogs always listen to them. The reason that they do so is because they look at these 2 little children as more important then they are…ie: my kids are pack leaders to the dogs….and one of the reasons this is because my kids do not shower the dogs with affection..in fact my kids rarely ever pet the dogs..or get into the faces of the dogs…they just go about their business and allow the dogs to exist…there will be plenty of time for affection later but not at this point…

In the above picture you see all 3 dogs that are up for adoption that all have had problems with chldren in the past…every one of these dogs gets out of the way of my kids and never jumps on them…I never tell them not to jump…i leave it to the kids to let the dogs know that they should not jump on them….Romy who is on the ground because she got bumped by Pepsi…..always pulls herself up and just keeps going…as gentle as he is with her..he is capable of causing so much harm to her…he is a very strong pitbull..but is always gentle with her…he respects her as his pack leader…

look at how Romy just barrels her way between the dogs…she never moves out of a dogs way..she expects dogs to move out of her way….she can barely keep her balance when walking in the yard without dogs so she is doing a great job when she has to push through dogs…they always have to move out of her way…

This is a very important picture about human/dog communication…what happens at this moment is that Romy puts her left arm up and turns her body to the right away from Max….every time a dog comes up to her and tries to get in her face she does this and every time a dog then moves away and finds something else to do…it is wonderful to watch….the wrong thing to do is to engage the dog since that would make the dog think you want to play with it “LIKE A DOG” and it would then jump up on you.

Romy is saying “if you bite me or jump on me i’ll be digging you a grave” and pepsi understands this so he always gives her space…again look at the body language of pepsi..he does give her space..

Romy and Clover collect all the rocks in the yard and put them in the bucket so the dogs don’t eat them….it is incredible to watch these 2 grow up with dogs….i learn so much about dog/child behavior by just studying them and welcome other families over to watch so they can better understand how dogs and childred can live together…keep in mind that during this 1 hour play session…the kids did not pet the dogs 1 time…they did throw balls to them but the big thing is that the kids went about their business with the dogs in the same space and the dogs learn how to behave around children….
